Dish with bats and iron-red glaze
This dish is of a very fine quality. It is decorated with bats flying in different attitudes and reserved on an iron-red ground. Details of the bats are finely drawn in with black enamel. Inside is a stylised character 壽 (shou ‘longevity’) in a medallion. Chinese people read an image of bats as an emblem for happiness as both the characters for bat and happiness are pronounced fu.
