Doucai cup with the ‘Five Treasures’
Outside, this twice-fired shallow cup is decorated with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in doucai style. The design is unusual and shows five lotuses supporting offerings. These are the 五珍寶(wuzhen bao ‘Five Treasures’: lotus, sacred mountain, peach, conch shell and candlestick). Potters at Jingdezhen made copies of this design in the Kangxi period (AD 1662–1722) (see PDF A711.) Genuine Chenghua porcelain has a mild yellow cast, is slightly irregular in form and the compositions of the motifs are well-balanced.
