There is an openwork design of rocks and waves, and applied plaintain, lotus, chysanthemum and peony in relief , with Fahua style green, aubergine and blue on-biscuit enamel.

Reticulated fahua vase and stand
Collectors coined the term 法華 or 琺華(Fahua ) in the 1920s. It refers to a decorative palette and style of ornament rather than to a kiln site. Rather like cloisonné decorated objects with boundaries of metal wires, fahua wares are decorated with designs generally outlined with trailed clay paste lines but sometimes with incised lines. These designs are filled in with bright overglaze colours. Chemically fahua glazes are of an alkaline type more commonly used in Middle Eastern ceramics. Two types were made: low-fired fahua stonewares in Northern China and high-fired fahua porcelains in Southern China.

Reason for treatment
Clean chip on base of vase, remove old fills flowers. Re-do fills in stand, consolidate crack on stand
Vase: Chip missing from base, evidence of old fill material in it. Some flowers have been filled and retouched. Fibres of cotton wool are caught on some of the foliage possible from an old clean. Surface dirt.Stand: Two chips along top rim with old repairs. Old repais to leaf edges. Old crack, but possible old break. Surface dirt.
Glazed surface cleaned with a 50:50 solution of de-ionised water and Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) applied on cotton wool swabs and dried with a paper towel. Removed old plaster fills mechanically with a scalpel from both the stand and the vase. Condolidated break edges of areas to be filled on the stand with 20% Paraloid B72 (ethyl methacrylate copolymer) in 50:50 Acetone (propan-1-one/dimethyl ketone) : Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol). Consolidate crack/old break on the stand with 30% Paraloid B72 in Acetone:IMS. Gap filled key missing areas on the stand with Superfine casting plaster (hydrated calcium sulphate) mixed with water. Cut back with a scalpel blade and sanded smooth with various grades of abrasive paper. Fine gap filled with Flugger fine surface acrylic filler. Retouched fills with Golden acrylic paints and Golden porcelain restoration glaze. Object was further cleaned with a 50:50 solution of de-ionised water and Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) applied on a cotton wool swab and dried with a paper towel.
