What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Panel with the Eight Immortals visiting Shoulao

Shoulao is the god of longevity and has an extended cranium. The Eight Immortals are a combination of male and female historical and legendary figures, each identified by different costume and attributes. For example Zhong Liquan is recognised by his top knots and fan, Han Xiangzi plays a flute and Li Tieguai has a ‘grotesque’ face, walks with a crutch and carries a gourd. The others are Zhang Guolao, Lan Caihe, Han Xiangzi, Cao Guojiu, Lu Dongbin and He Xiangu.
