As with many Chinese emperors before him, the Jiajing emperor (reigned AD 1522–66) was obsessed with his own immortality. Although potters created some new shapes, they also repeated decorative motifs or forms invented in the early fifteenth century such as this gourd shaped vase. The base carries a six-character underglaze blue reign mark of the Jiajing emperor.
