Box with guan-type glaze
This square box has six spur marks on the bottom and is covered with a crackled celadon glaze. Its form while common in the Qing period, was unknown in the Southern Song era. Dark clays were used at Jingdezhen in the eighteenth century to create imitations of earlier dark-bodied wares but potters also applied brown washes to the exposed white porcelain body to recreate the紫口鐵足(zikou tiezu ‘purple mouth and iron foot’) of original guan wares made at Hangzhou (see case 54).
