Cup with the Eight Daoist Immortals
This porcelain cup is carefully carved to reveal an openwork design. In each roundel are applied biscuit figures of the Eight Daoist Immortals in horseback visiting Shoulao, the god of longevity. Bowl with the Eight Immortals visiting Shoulao. The Eight Immortals are a combination of male and female historical and legendary figures, each identified by different costume and attributes. For example Zhong Liquan is recognised by his top knots and fan, and Li Tieguai has a ‘grotesque’ face, walks with a crutch and carries a gourd.
