Model of a buffalo head
This porcelain cup is modelled as a buffalo with a bridle. Cups in the form of animal heads were first made in ceramic in the Tang dynasty (AD 618–906), inspired by Middle Eastern metalwork forms. The buffalo is one of the twelve zodiacal animals in China and represents, for example, the calendar years 2009 and 2021.
