Dish with phoenix and flowers
Potters in the late Ming and Qing dynasties made copies of Ding wares at Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province, Zhangzhou in Fujian province and in other southern kilns. This dish is decorated with a design of classic scroll on the rim, flowers and phoenix. It has been extensively conserved.

Remove overpaint. check crack, surface clean.
The dish presents crackled glaze. It seems to have two layers of glaze, there are cracks on both layers, the cracks on the layer underneath have a darker colour, it might be possible that they were oxidized before the over layer was applied. The dish presents overpaint on one area of the rim. The overpaint is obscuring the damaged area underneath it. It is difficult to appreciate the design on the dish due to the amount of cracks on the surface.
The overpaint was removed with acetone on a cotton swab. The crack underneath was checked. There is a small chip but the crack is stable, the crack was steam cleaned and the dish was let to dry under a cover to prevent dirt and dust. Then the small chip was filled with Fynebond resin which was bulked heavily with Aerosil 805 fumed silica and coloured with artists' dry ground pigments. The resin was applied with a metal spatula, allowed to cure fully and polished with Micromesh fine abrasive cloth (silicon carbide/aluminium oxide) grades 2400, 3200, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000. Object was further cleaned with a 50:50 solution of de-ionised water and Industrial methylated spirits (ethanol, methanol) applied on a cotton wool swab and dried with a paper towel.
White porcelain dish. Covered with cream white crackled glaze. Decorated with incised design of classic scroll on rim, flower scroll round sides and phoenix in the well.
