What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Figure of seated Guanyin

Potters made figures of gods and goddesses for domestic altars as well as to export at the Dehua kilns. Originally the figures were probably made as cheap alternatives to ivory carvings of deities also made in Fujian. Porcelains from Dehua were exported to Europe as evidenced by excavations, shipwrecks, shipping lists and inventories of possessions. They were also made for the domestic market. Figures of Guanyin, are quite common. This figure shows her holding a scroll. It bears the mark of the individual potter on the back.
