Room 95 label text: PDF 295 Model of a bird house This barrel shaped bird house has two realistically modelled birds applied to the roof and is incised with lines suggesting wooden struts. Two square holes for the birds to enter and exit the coop are carved into one side. Potters achieved this thin olive-green glaze colour by combining a mixture of wood ash and the clay also used for the Yue stoneware body. Local people from the area we now call Zhejiang province used this ceramic model as a substitute for a real bird house, together with other models, for burial. Archaeologists have excavated similar bird houses at various sites in China including one in a tomb near Nanjing dated equivalent to AD 301.
