What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Stoneware, iron-pigmented brown slip, cream slip and transparent glaze. The inscription reads: 天地日月,天下太[大]平, 知乎者者,秀炁安然, 長命富貴,金玉滿堂, 清原書堂,雲衢書堂. Tiandi riyue, tianxia tai [da] ping, zhihu zhezhe, xiuqi anran, changming fugui, Jinyu mantang, Qingyuan shutang, Yunqu shutang.
