Jar with tiger and inscription
Changsha wares were made at kilns located in an area of about five kilometers from Tongguan City to Shizhu Lake in Wangcheng County in Changsha City, Hunan Province. They are popular wares, characterised by rather coarse stoneware bodies modelled in shapes for daily use such as jars, ewers and bowls. Some examples are technologically very exciting as they demonstrate perhaps the earliest use of underglaze copper-red and copper-green decoration. This jar is painted in underglaze iron-brown with a tiger on one side and with an inscription on the other which translates ‘ in the third year of the Changqing period [AD 823], the Buddhist believer Bo Sidu respectfully made this vessel as an offering to be placed before the Great Buddha.’.
