Figure of a seated Guanyin in the attitude of meditation
Potters made figures of gods and goddesses for domestic altars as well as to export at the Dehua kilns. Originally the figures were probably made as cheap alternatives to ivory carvings of deities also made in Fujian. Porcelains from Dehua were exported to Europe as evidenced by excavations, shipwrecks, shipping lists and inventories of possessions. They were also made for the domestic market. This figure has a four character maker’s mark on the back.
