Box containing seven seals
Seals were used for official and personal purposes instead of a signature or sometimes with a brush signature. These seals are stained red from the red seal paste commonly used in China. This was made from finely ground cinnabar mineral mixed with castor oil and either silk strands or plant fibres. To print a signature or mark, the writer would press his or her seal into the paste and then stamp it on a piece of paper.
