Dish with two dragons
This shallow dish is moulded with two five-clawed dragons pursuing each other around the cavetto, separated by ruyi clouds and with three incised ruyi clouds in the centre. The decoration is semi-obscured by its cloudy copper-red monochrome glaze, which is typical of the Hongwu period. The base is unglazed but treated with a dressing. Such dishes were made at Jingdezhen for imperial ceremonial use. In contrast to the West, in China dragons are traditionally considered to be auspicious. They are regarded as the controllers of the water supply and ultimately came to symbolise imperial authority.
