Description
Porcelain dish with rounded sides and everted mouth rim. There are scrolling peaches and leaves in reserve against cobalt blue background on the exterior, and a peach tree, whose trunk has been shaped into the character for long life, with two lingzhi fungi at its base in reserve against cobalt blue background on the interior. There is a mark on the base.

Room 95 label text: PDF 621 Dish with longevity character This dish is decorated with a peach tree whose trunk has been transformed into a longevity character. There are further peaches around the outside of the dish. This decoration is reserved in white on a blue ground. Chinese people read peaches as an emblem of long life. The base carries an underglaze blue Jiajing reign mark beneath a blue glaze. Porcelain with reserved decoration on a cobalt-blue ground Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province 江西省, 景德鎮 Ming dynasty, Jiajing mark and period, AD 1522–1566
