Blue-and-white bowl with phoenixes
This bowl is painted in underglaze blue with three phoenixes flying among peony scrolls outside and with a roundel containing a floral spray inside. The base carries the inscription癸丑年造 (guizhou nian zao ‘made in the [cyclical] guizhou year’). Cyclical years occur every sixty years. Judging by the Jiajing style decoration and cobalt colour, this bowl should be dated equivalent to the year AD 1553.
