Porcelain saucer with rounded cavetto and flattened rim. There is a scene of the demolition of Rotterdam during riots in 1690 in underglaze cobalt blue in the centre, and four cartouches containing stylised fruits and flowers against a patterned ground on the cavetto. There are four auspicious motifs on back. A set with cup PDF 646.

Blue-and-white saucer showing the Rotterdam riots
Sir Percival David bought very little European market export ware. This small saucer and its matching cup (PDF 646) are painted with a scene copied from a European print showing the demolition of Rotterdam during riots of 1690. The Chinese character玉meaning jade is painted in underglaze blue on the base.

Reason for treatment
Improve old fill and clean joins
Old joins dirty and visible. Chip in rim not filled.
Dismantled old joins using Nitromors water soluble (methylene chloride, sodium hydroxide, cellulose) applied with small brush and sealed under aluminium foil until joins released. Scraped away remaining adhesive using a scalpel. Washed break edges with Ariel automatic (anionic and non ionic synthetic surfactants, sodium tripolyphosphate) dissolved in warm tap water and rinsed with warm tap water. After dry, degreased break edges with acetone ((propan-1-one/dimethyl ketone) applied with a small brush.Bonded using Paraloid B72 (ethyl methacrylate copolymer) 50% w/v in acetone Filled chip with Fynebond epoxy resin bulked with Cab-o-sil (fumed silica) and coloured with powdered pigments. Allowed to set. Sanded fill using Micromesh abrasive cloths.Washed exterior of saucer using Synperonic N (non ionic detergent, nonylphenol ethylene oxide condensate) diluted with tap water to the recommended strength and applied on a cotton wool pad. Rinsed with warm tap water applied on a cotton wool pad. Patted dry using low-lint tissue.
