What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Meiping with Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove

The 竹林七仙 ('Zhulin qixian ‘Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’], are depicted at ease, seated in groups, conversing, holding texts and leaning against books, in a bamboo grove. n. These scholarly men, known for their brains, musical talents and capacity for alcohol, lived in the late third century AD. They were later famed for refusing to serve a corrupt regime and were lauded for their actions. The theme was especially popular on porcelains of the 1630s and 1640s and again in the 1660s to 1670s.
