Room 95 label text: PDF 673 Bowl with copper-red fishes This bowl is decorated with four fish in underglaze red with incised details such as their scales. Chinese people regard paired fish as a rebus (visual pun) for abundance as the words for both fish 魚 and abundance 餘, are pronounced yu. In the sixteenth century, mostly potters at Jingdezhen substituted underglaze copper-red with overglaze iron-red which was much easier to control and caused less wastage when completing imperial orders. On the base is a four-character Zhengde reign mark in underglaze blue in a double ring. Porcelain with incised decoration, underglaze cobalt-blue and underglaze copper-red Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province Ming dynasty, Zhengde mark and period, AD 1506–1521
