Zhangzhou Export ware porcelain dish with slightly flattened rim. Swatow type. There is a 'fu' character (good fortune) in turquoise overglaze enamel in the centre, two turquoise dragons with clouds and flames in red and green enamels, medallions containing Chinese characters between flowering peonies, chrysanthemums, plums and lotus in black, red and green in the cavetto, and a chrysanthemum scroll on rim, flower motifs in red on the exterior.

Dish with Confucian virtues
Merchants traded such dishes to countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia as well as to Japan and Holland. They are characterised by coarse sandy bases and designs rendered in free and spontaneous brushstrokes. This example is painted with dragons and with four characters in the cavetto in medallions which are read together忠;孝;廉;勛; 福 'zhong', 'xiao', 'lian' and 'xun' (loyalty, filial piety, honesty and meritorious contribution). The character in the centre is 福 (fu ‘happiness’).
