    Blue Jun cup

This cup was probably used for drinking wine and might have been used in conjunction with a stand. Where the Jun glaze runs thin towards the edge of the cup, it becomes semi-transparent to olive green. Compared to contemporary Northern Song celadons such as Ru and Yaozhou wares, Jun wares have relatively coarse stoneware bodies. Jun wares are characterised by opalescent blue, purple or occasionally green glazes.

    9 March 2009

    Reason for treatment

    Treatment proposal

Clean. Remove overpaint. Dismantle if neccessary. Fill and paint.

Yellowed overpaint which when removed revealed a number of orange resin and plaster fills. There were also stepped joins.

    Treatment details

Surface and overpaint cleaned with acetone applied on cotton wool swabs on a satay stick.

Dismantled in an atmosphere of acetone in a glass desiccator with tissue support which softened the old fills which could then be removed with a scalpel.

Reconstructed using 40% Paraloid B72 in acetone. Joins supported with sand bags during curing.

Missing areas filled with Fynebond mixed with *ARSIL*. Cut back with scalpel and sanded smooth with various grades of abrasive paper.
