Room 95 label text: PDF 125 Vase imitating a basket This vase is incised with lines to imitate basketwork and with a trompe l’oeil rope around the neck. The design is archaistic and loosely based on earlier white wares with basket work patterns made in North China. Three characters永壽宮 (Yongshougong ‘Never-ending Longlife Palace’) are incised on the base and coloured with a red pigment. This palace was located within the Forbidden City – the Ming and Qing emperor’s residence and seat of government. There is a separate character 寅 (yin ‘reverence’) also incised on the base. Underfired porcelain, incised and with transparent glaze South China Qing dynasty, about AD 1700–1800
