What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Flower-shaped dish with inscription


    This flower-shaped dish has a flat base with an inscription. This inscription reads 嘉定寳用庚午年造 (Jiading bao yong gengwu nian zao ‘made in the Gengwu year of Jiading reign [AD 1210]) and 三號 (sanhao ‘number three’). However this inscription is later incised and gilded.
