What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

A collection of photographs by Sir Ronald Garvey. The images mostly depict the Solomon Islands where he served as a District Officer from 1926-1932. Lady Patricia Garvey (Sir Ronald Garvey's widow) enabled the British Museum to make photographic copy prints from original photographs and negatives. The collection was housed in albums and/or kept as loose prints or negatives. PicDoc 260 annotates whether the image was copied from an album, a lose print, or from a negative. It also annotates all the original inscriptions found accompanying with the photographic prints and/or the albums.
