What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

        The cardboard case bears the title of the game and the address "Nürnberg, zu finden bei G.P.J. Bieling", and contains a sheet of printed instructions in German.
  • Curator's comments

    Complete pack in which the lower part of each card is occupied by a fancy vignette, and the upper by a running number and two miniature cards, one showing the value in French suit-marks, the other giving a German equivalent. The set contains a printed leaflet (4pp) describing the game: 'Das Spiel der Hofnung, mit einer neuen Figurenkarte von 36 illumin. Blättern.....Nürnberg, zu finden bei G.P.J.Bieling.'
