What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

    Reverend Wilhelm Walther arrived in Agotu in 1975, he belonged to the Leipzig Mission which then changed to the Neuendettelsauer Mission, the first Lutheran Mission in New Guinea (arrived 1886). Reverend Wilhelm Walther was in Agotu until 1978 and Katesa Schlosser visited Agotu as a guest of the Reverend.This image was photographed on the 26th-28th September 1978. The same belt is shown in Oc,A27.22.
