This photograph is from an album of 19 images, containing images of Maori people.

The garments worn appear to be piupiu or rapaki, which could be worn as waist mats or around the shoulders. The rapaki is thought to be the antecedent of the piupiu.
See p.117, Pendergrast, M., 1987. Te aho tapu: The sacred thread. Auckland, N.Z.: Reed Methuen.
See comments relating to the pake karure, hihi or hihihihi cloak, which was also worn as a piupiu, and has a similar appearance to the garment on the left. P.9, Hopa, N., 1971. The art of piupiu making. Wellington, N.Z.: A.H. & A.W. Reed.
