- Curator's comments
- The self-portrait was painted for presentation to the Royal Academy, where it still hangs. It shows the artist in the robes of his honorary Oxford D.C.L. with a bust of Michelangelo. Reynolds' admiration of Michelangelo is most movingly expressed in the last 'Discourse'.
