Watanabe's second work on Ise. “Here is an unusual monument indeed. Instead of merely admiring it as we do other ancient art, we cannot help being entranced by its newness, its freshness, and its purity as well. In the worship of the ancestral gods of Shinto, we do of course sense an atmosphere of antiquity. But with the system of periodic reconstruction, a youthful joy is added as we gaze at the gleaming, freshly cut cypress wood of the newly built shrine. This mixture of the new and the old gives Ise Jingu all the charm of a living being.” (afterword). Watanabe was awarded the Mainichi Art Award for this work. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
