Photobook. Two volumes. First edition.

The title is programmatic: Takanashi moves the viewer 'towards the city' hazy and indistinct at first but suddenly we are there: Loneliness and emptiness, a boy watching Barbie dolls through a small window, light and darkness, waves lashing against the shore dominated by an industrial plant, co-incidental shapes and grainy fog, this is Japanese avant-garde at its best with a distinct sense of 'fu-an' (uncomfortable, lit. without safety). Black is the colour that unites the two volumes: But whereas the large folio is sumptuously printed on very high quality paper, the small brochure has the feel of a school-boys notebook. This is without doubt Takanashi's best work. Only one copy in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
