  • Curator's comments

Chaloner Smith notes that the role of Spilletta in Cocchi's burlesque 'Gli Amanti Gelosi' was taken by Mlle Giordani at the London opera-house in 1756, and suggests that the print was produced on that occasion. Whether it is intended to pass as a portrait of her or Mme Favart as in the original production, or whether it is merely a type is unclear.
However, a print engraved in 1754 by Jean Daullé after the same painting identifies the young woman as Justine Favart (see impression in BM 1866,0113.67).
