Letter to Philip Sykas (curator at the Chertsy Museum) from Margaret Mizen dated 27th October 1996: 'I am the original wearer in the photograph. My parents bought the costume for me in Cracow in 1927 when I was nine years old, for me to wear at fancy dress parties at home in England. The outfit was not of course made as a 'fancy dress'. It was the authentic costume worn by Polish girls for festive occasions.'
The photograph depicts the original wearer Ada Margaret Tiffin, aged 11, in 1929.
