- Curator's comments
- Sanai was born in Shizuoka in 1968. Having worked as a photographer for various magazines and CD covers he published his first book 'Ikiteiru' in 1997 to great acclaim. The introduction to this, his second book is written on the end-paper. The book has two title-pages where you least expect them, together with what seems to be an entry from a diary. Sanai seems to like cars, he really likes them. He bought himself a "Mark II 71 Sedan, Pearl two tone, Automatic, power steering, power windows, fuel normal, for 80,000 Yen, and he is a happy guy." And the photos are just about that, a happy guy taking his car for a drive. The back lights of the car, the car under snow, a strange image of a dashboard (or is it the railing of a bridge?), the seaside. There is no narrative in this book, just a series of images with a unified feel. Sanai has developed his own pictorial style that is instantly recognizable. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
