This is a beautifully illustrated novel by the famous writer Dazai Osamu (1909-1948) that was originally published in 1939. It is curious to see how well the images taken at the end of the 20th century harmonize with a text written 60 years earlier. Two pages of text are followed by two photographs. It is the combination of two images facing each other that is particularly successful. The images have a soft, lyrical quality as well as a delicate sense of femininity. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
