- Kyoshu 郷愁 (Homesickness)
Photobook. One volume. First edition. Signed copy.
- Made in: Tokyo-to
Sakurai was born in 1909 in Takasaki City in Gumma prefecture. After graduating from the engineering department of Tokyo Imperial University he joined Takachiho manufacturing, a fore-runner of Olympus Co. Sakurai studied pictorial photography under Nakajima Kenkichi and joined his photographic club called Kiribatake ('Grove of Paulownias'). Throughout his career he remained faithful to the ideals of 'pictorialism' producing images that are subtle and lyrical without being overly sentimental. This is Sakurai's first work: It is divided into two parts, the first is entitled 'Musashino', the second 'Shinanoji', evoking travels along an old road. Only three copies in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
