'Color' is a surprising work on many levels: The viewer of his previous publications may have been forgiven for thinking that the black-and-white images had all been taken using a monochrome film. This is not the case. Moriyama often used colour film and simply printed in b.-w. Colour clearly softens the impact of his images and in some instances adds a sentimental dimension that may not have been intended at the time the images were taken. Some of this is due to the passing of time, and changing fashions. The book covers twenty years ('68 to '88) and brings back a number of Moriyama's favourite locations (Shinjuku, Osaka, Kanagawa, Yokosuka, etc) and subjects (streets, back alleys, prostitutes, posters, garbage dumps). It is one of the most beautiful productions by Sokyu-sha, one of the leading contemporary photographic publishers in Japan. A second volume was published in 1999. Only one copy in OCLC.
