- Curator's comments
- From March 1987 to January 1988, I travelled almost the whole of Japan, up north to the Rebun Island in Hokkaido, and down south to the Yonakuni Island in Okinawa. This is a collection of the pictures of the 17-year olds I met during my travels. As long as they were 17-year olds at the moment when I met them and pressed the shutter of my camera, I did not care who my models were... The age of 17, especially, is a subtle one, when one is neither grown-up nor a child. Applying to them the stereotype of the 'age of in-between', however, was not enough. Having worked with teenagers, I had the feeling that 17 was an important time in determining one's future life.” (Afterword). Hashiguchi's superb album of portraits is remarkable for showing the breadth of Japanese society through clearly defined individuals. Each person gave details of their position within their family (brothers or sisters), what they had for breakfast, what their goal in life is, what music they enjoy and what they recently bought for themselves. This is much more than just a portrait. Hashiguchi published two further books in a similar vein, namely 'Work' and 'Dreams'. No copy in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
