Throughout the 90s Hatakeyama photographed for a number of art-related publications. Limeworks is the first work under his own direction. The subject matter invites comparison to the constructivist work of Koishi Kiyoshi and of course to his teacher Otsuji who had treated a similar subject in his series 'Dam Sites on Azusa River' in 1968. Hatakeyama superimposes a beauty on the scene that is more or less absent. Shapes and colour are the defining moment in his composition. The photography is perfected to the point of bursting. There are no human beings in his work, and yet the artificial landscape is of course entirely the product of humans. There is no documentary aspect to this photography, and no interaction between the photographer and the scene. There is a subtle manipulative quality to the images that is similar to an advert, persuading one to buy without need or purpose. This work won the 22nd Kimura Ihei prize. The publisher went bankrupt shortly after the book was published and the book was remaindered. It is now difficult to find.
