- Curator's comments
- Fukase Masahisa was born in 1934 in Bifuka (Hokkaido), where his family operated a photographic portrait studio. In 1956 he graduated with a degree in photography from Nihon University and subsequently worked for an advertising agency before going freelance in 1968. His present first book 'Yugi' (Homo Ludence, 1971) made his wife Yoko (a Noh actress) the central subject. Following their divorce in 1976, Fukase returned to Hokkaido and began a series on ravens that was eventually turned into his most acclaimed book (Karasu, 1986). The ominously dark photographs reflected his increasingly depressed state of mind. In 1992, he fell down the stairs of a bar and has been in a coma ever since. Published as vol. 4 in the series Shozo no Gendai (The Image Today). Five copies in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
