- Curator's comments
- Araki's debut in photography was a documentary-style reportage he did on children in a working-class neighbourhood of Mika-wajima in Tokyo in 1963. The work centres around the boy Hoshino Sachio (Sachin), a feisty loud-mouthed kid who Araki closely identified with. The children clearly relish the situation of being photographed by somebody who empathises with them as they pose, play, fight, and jump about with boundless energy against the back-ground of a pre-war apartment block. This series was originally conceived as a film that Araki submitted for his graduation at Chiba University. He was awarded the first Taiyo prize for stills from the film in 1964 but it was only thirty years later that Araki published them in book-format. “The kids are all right” could be the subtitle to these dynamic scenes.
