What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

A very rare promotional publication by All Nippon Airways that was only given to customers who had travelled on certain flights to Kyushu. The volume of text is a short story by Ijuin Shizuka, a popular writer of Korean ancestry. The actress in the images is Honjo Manami. There is a strong underlying eroticism in these images. Unusually for Araki there is no nudity on display. The present work curiously brings Araki back to what he originally rebelled against, namely advertising and “those private lives and scenes that are essentially fake”. No copy on OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
