  • Curator's comments

Chaloner Smith catalogues this portrait as being of Mongomerie, guarder of the lodge, by whom the print is dedicated to the Marquess of Caernarvon. However, it seems more likely that the sitter is related to the dedicatee than vice-versa, and there is a strong resemblance between the sitter here and the Marquess of Caernarvon, 1st Duke of Chandos, as portrayed by Michael Dahl: given that the painter died in 1690, it is possible that the portrait is of one of the Duke's ancestors.
