Reason for analysis
Analysis of White Crystals on Copper Alloy Standing Figure ANE 1885,1227.10
The copper standing figure ANE 1885,1227.10 was undergoing conservationfollowing a survey. Patches of white crystals were observed and analysis requested todetermine if this material should be removed.A small sample was removed and analysed using FTIR. The resultant spectrum(ANAL\ANE1885#12#27#10.SPA) indicated a mixture of gypsum with an organicmaterial. The gypsum obscured too many of the other materials infrared absorptionsto allow an identification. Although gypsum has been available since antiquity, itsmorphology and position would seem to dictate against an original application to theobject
