Gilt-bronze pommels of the kanto tachi mounting frequently contained dragons or phoenixes, either singly or in pairs. The phoenix of this piece is in a surround forming stylised flames. The style of roundly casting these objects originated on the continent, whereas later pieces worked in flat plate (no. 2) were a Japanese innovation.
