This drawing is related to the oil painting already in OA by Souza (1993. 10-15. 01) which shows a bearded male figure apparently based on the Indus Valley 'Priest King'. In the catalogue 'Images of Christ' (Northampton. 1993), the Souza entry the editor says 'He has always acknowledged the importance of the Roman Catholic Church to his art: "not its dogmas, but its grand architecture and the splendour of its services ... the richly embroidered vestments ... the gold and bright colours of the wooden saints ... the smell of incense ... and the enormous crucifix with the impaled image of a Man supposed to be the son of God, scourged and dripping, with matted hair tangled in plaited thorns."
