What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

  • Curator's comments

This is an unusual example of a portrait of a woman who is neither young, beautiful nor royal. The fan suggvests that she is a servant and as such may have been an important member of the royal household.

During the reign of Jahangir portraits of women increased in number and variety. Although the identity of the sitter for this portrait remains unknown, the artist has striven to portray her as a woman of substance and character. She resembles other Mughal portraits said to be Nur Jahan, Jahangir's most powerful wife.
