- Curator's comments
- Callot executed three plates illustrating the interludes of 'La liberazione di Tirenno et d'Arnea', a spectacle written by Andrea Salvadori, organized and designed by Luigi Parigi and performed on 5 February 1617 at the Sala delle Commedie (or Teatro Grande, located at the 2nd floor of the Uffizi; decoration now mostly lost) for the mariage of Caterina, sister of Cosimo II Grand Duke of Tuscany, with Ferdinand of Gonzagua. The storyline involves Tyrrhenus and Arnea, the mythical ancestors of the Etruscans and celebrates love as well as the relationship between the duchies of Mantua and of Tuscany.
Lieure states that the text of the spectacles was printed for the first time in a late edition of Salvadori's works (Rome: Michel Ercole, 1668); whether the plates were included in this edition is not said. The use made of these plates until 1668 date is not specified.
