- Object: Jack and Poll at Portsmouth, after the Battle of Trafalgar
- Description
-
The pair stand on the harbour fortifications of Portsmouth, guns pointing out to sea, where ships are at anchor. A ship off shore fires a salute. A flag on the dock buildings is lowered. Poll stands with hands clasped on Jack's shoulder; he looks grimly down at an open tobacco-box. She says: "Welcome! welcome home my Dear Jack - !! Ah! but you have not brought the brave Lord Nelson with you, well I hope he is in Heaven." He answers: "In Heaven! aye to be sure he is Poll. What in Hell should prevent him." They are not caricatured. He has a bludgeon under his arm; she wears a flowered gown looped over a petticoat, with large white apron. Cf. BMSat 10445. 1 January 1806
